Bone County Sheriff’s Department – Internal Affairs Division
The Internal Affairs Division (IAD) of the Bone County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for receiving, reviewing, and investigating complaints, commendations, and allegations of misconduct involving department members. The division ensures department personnel maintain the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability.

Internal Affairs investigates allegations of misconduct, violations of department policy, and actions that may discredit the Sheriff’s Department or undermine public trust. Complaints may be filed by members of the public, department employees, or outside agencies.
Complaint Submission Process
A complaint against a member of the Bone County Sheriff’s Department may be submitted in any of the following ways:
  • In person at any Sheriff’s Station
  • By email or written correspondence to the Internal Affairs Division, by completing the official complaint form provided below
Complaints may be submitted anonymously; however, anonymous complaints may limit the department’s ability to contact the complainant for additional information or provide status updates regarding the investigation.

Upon receipt, each complaint is assigned a reference number and undergoes an initial review by Internal Affairs Staff to determine the nature and credibility of the complaint.
Preliminary Review Outcomes
Following the preliminary review, a complaint may be classified as one of the following:
  • Non-Department Employee (NDE): The investigation determined the reported individual is not a member of the Bone County Sheriff’s Department.
  • No Misconduct (NM): The review determined the reported employee's actions did not constitute misconduct.
  • Withdrawn: The complainant has withdrawn the complaint and no further investigation is warranted.
  • Referred: The complaint has been forwarded to another bureau, division, or agency for appropriate handling.
If the complaint meets investigative criteria, it will be formally accepted and assigned for investigation.
Investigation Process
The Internal Affairs Division conducts a thorough and impartial investigation of all accepted complaints. This process includes reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, and examining relevant reports and records.

Upon completion of the investigation, one of the following findings will be issued:
  • Sustained: The investigation determined sufficient evidence exists to support the allegation(s).
  • Not Sustained: Insufficient evidence exists to either prove or disprove the allegation(s).
  • Exonerated: The alleged act occurred but was lawful, justified, and proper.
  • Unfounded: The investigation determined the alleged act did not occur.
In some cases, additional administrative findings may be issued when conduct does not rise to the level of misconduct but warrants review or corrective action.
Investigation Timeline & Notification
The Bone County Sheriff's Department strives to complete Internal Affairs investigations in a timely manner, generally within thirty (30) days of acceptance, when practicable.

Upon conclusion of the investigation, the complainant will be notified in writing of the investigation's outcome. In accordance with law and department policy, specific disciplinary actions taken against employees may not be disclosed.
